The Cahuilla Indian Reservation was established by executive order on December 27, 1875 by President Ulysses S. Grant. The Cahuilla Indian Reservation is located in south Riverside County near the town of Anza. The Reservation is comprised of 18,884 acres and is home to approximately 220 tribal members residing in about 60 homes.
Although the Reservation was established in 1875, the Great Creators, created the Cahuilla Nation and the world far before the arrival of non Indian outsiders. The Cahuilla people lived in small villages, moving with the seasons and following the game trails and living off the land. The aboriginal territory of the Cahuilla stretched, as the elders would say, “from the mountains to the sea” (modern day Chocolate Mountains to the Pacific coast).
The Cahuilla people have a rich culture and tradition and they maintain their distinct culture and identity today. The Cahuilla language is still spoken by some of the people today. The Cahuilla pass their culture and history to younger people through the oral tradition in stories and songs. The Cahuilla still sing their ancient Bird Songs, which tell of creation and the migration of the Cahuilla to their homelands they occupy today. The Cahuilla continue their rich basket making tradition, which involves great skill and intricate designs. The Cahuilla still play their traditional game of “peon”. The game is played with two teams of four men kneeling and facing each other, who try to guess which hand of the opposing team member has a white bone. The game can last from 15 minutes to eight hours and family songs are sung by each team’s singers.
Cahuilla cowboys were known as some of the best cowboys in Southern California and were renowned as able to out ride and out rope all others. This tradition continues and the Cahuilla today still maintain hundreds of cattle on the Reservation.
While recognizing the importance of maintaining their culture and identity, the Cahuilla have also sought to adapt and change to the outside world.
